OfficeJet Pro 8720 "Supply system error" message won't cancel. I replaced all cartridges & cleaned contacts, removed cartridge holder & cleaned contacts & ink from outside & did several hard re-starts & can't clear the error message. Now what?

Hi @gizmo928,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is showing a “Supply System Error” and the message won’t clear even after replacing cartridges and cleaning contacts. Let’s go through some steps to troubleshoot this further.

Power Cycle the Printer Properly

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall outlet.

Wait at least 5 minutes to fully discharge power.

Plug it back in and turn it on.

Verify Cartridge Installation

Remove all cartridges.

Reinsert them firmly until they click into place.

Make sure no protective tape remains on the cartridges.

Inspect Cartridges for Damage

Check for leaks, broken parts, or damaged contacts.

Even a single defective cartridge can trigger a supply system error.

Clean Contacts Thoroughly

Use a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to clean the gold contacts on both the cartridges and the carriage.

Let them dry completely before reinserting.

Check the Cartridge Carrier / Printhead

Remove the printhead or carriage if your model allows.

Inspect for ink build-up or debris that might prevent proper cartridge seating.

Clean carefully and reseat the carrier.

Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

Go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Restore → Restore Factory Defaults.

After the reset, power cycle the printer again.

Check for Firmware Updates

Connect the printer to the HP Smart app or HP website.

Update to the latest firmware, which can sometimes resolve persistent supply system errors.

Test with Genuine HP Cartridges

If you’re using refilled or third-party cartridges, replace them temporarily with genuine HP cartridges.

Some supply system errors cannot be cleared with non-HP cartridges.

I hope this helps.
