"there is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn printer off, then on, if your problem persists, contact HP"

I have replaced all the cartridges, power reset the printer numerous times, and wiped off what I could get to on the printer where the carts install.

Hi @Kirk_Clement,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" can be caused by a variety of issues, such as cartridge or printhead errors, or a firmware problem. Since you've replaced the cartridges, performed power resets, and cleaned the cartridge area, here are additional steps to resolve the issue.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source and disconnect it from your computer or Wi-Fi.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (not a power strip) and turn it back on.

Clean the Printhead

The printhead may be clogged or not seated properly. Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access area.
  2. Remove the cartridges and locate the printhead.
  3. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and cartridges.
  4. Allow the printhead to dry completely.
  5. Reinsert the printhead and cartridges.

Update Printer Firmware

  1. Visit the HP Support website.
  2. Search for your printer model and download the latest firmware update.
  3. Install the update using the printer's USB connection or Wi-Fi (if the printer can connect).

Check for Ink Cartridge Compatibility

Ensure you are using the correct cartridges for your printer model. Sometimes, third-party cartridges or damaged cartridges can cause this error.

Reset to Factory Settings

  1. Access the printer's menu and navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
  2. Confirm the reset and test the printer after rebooting.

Check for Mechanical Blockages

  1. Open the printer and inspect the cartridge area for paper jams, packaging materials, or debris.
  2. Ensure the ink cartridges are properly seated and the printhead latch (if applicable) is secured.

Test the Printer Without Cartridges

  1. Remove all the cartridges.
  2. Turn on the printer. It should prompt you to insert cartridges.
  3. Insert one cartridge at a time to identify if a specific cartridge is causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
