Hi @debgran,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

A red light flashing on your HP printer with a “blocked” message usually means the printer has detected an issue that prevents printing. Here are the troubleshooting steps:

Common Causes

  • Paper jam or misfeed.
  • Cartridge error (missing, incompatible, or not seated properly).
  • Door or cover open.
  • The printhead carriage is stuck.
  • Foreign object inside the printer.

Steps to Fix It

1. Check for Paper Jams

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Open all access doors (input tray, output tray, rear access if available).
  • Remove any jammed paper or debris.
  • Make sure rollers are clean and move freely.

2. Inspect Cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reseat cartridges firmly.
  • Ensure they are genuine HP cartridges.
  • If the error persists, clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.

3. Check Printhead Carriage

  • Power on the printer.
  • Open the cartridge door and see if the carriage moves.
  • If stuck, gently move it to the center and clear any obstruction.

4. Close All Doors Securely

  • Make sure the cartridge access door and paper tray are fully closed.

5. Restart the Printer

  • Disconnect the power cord for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn on the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
