Hi @SCBH,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your printer that is making noise and prints very slow.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, I'm here to help you today.
Please follow the steps below to fix the issue.
A) Perform a power drain.
1) Take out the cartridges
2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.
3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.
4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.
5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.
Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges
B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.
C) Refer to the steps below to further troubleshoot.
1. Paper Feed or Roller Issues
- Cause: Dust or debris in the paper feed path or worn-out rollers can cause resistance, making the motor work harder and slowing down printing.
- Solution:
- Open the printer and inspect the rollers and paper feed path for debris or worn parts.
- Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.
- Replace rollers if they show signs of wear.
2. Print Settings
- Cause: Printing in high-quality mode (e.g., "Best" mode) or on heavier media can slow down printing and make the motor sound more strained.
- Solution:
- Check your print settings in the printer driver:
- Navigate to Printer Properties or Printing Preferences.
- Set the print quality to "Normal" or "Draft" for faster printing.
- Ensure the paper type matches the actual paper in the tray.
- Test print speed after making these changes.
- Check your print settings in the printer driver:
3. Internal Components or Motor Strain
- Cause: Internal parts, like the fuser or motor, may be wearing out or malfunctioning.
- Solution:
- Inspect the fuser for signs of damage (e.g., unusual wear or debris).
- If you're comfortable, run a Self-Test Diagnostic Report to check for hardware errors:
- Go to the printer’s control panel.
- Navigate to Reports > Printer Status Report or similar.
- Look for any error codes or warnings.
D) If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults and let me know if that resolves the issue.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

We tried these options and nothing changed. My other therapist printed from her laptop just fine. We thought it might be a driver issue since it started after I got a new laptop. That was not the case. It is definitely something to do with the connection between my computer and the printer.
