Hi @kat356,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how confusing and frustrating it can be when your HP DeskJet printer insists the door is closed even when it’s clearly open and you're trying to print. It’s like the printer is ignoring what’s right in front of it, and that can feel like a real roadblock when you're just trying to get things done.

Let’s walk through the steps to resolve this issue.

Steps to Fix “Door Open” Error When Door Is Actually Open

Here’s what HP recommends:

1. Check for Obstructions

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Look carefully for bits of paper, packing tape, or foam that might be stuck around the hinges or sensor area.
  • Remove anything that could prevent the door from closing properly.

2. Close the Door Firmly

  • Gently but firmly close the cartridge door.
  • Make sure it snaps into place and rests flush against the printer body.
  • Sometimes the door looks closed but isn’t fully latched.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on and check if the error clears.

4. Check the Door Sensor

If the error persists:

  • Open the door and look for a small plastic tab or sensor activator, usually on the left or right side.
  • If it’s broken or missing, the printer won’t detect the door properly.
  • You can gently press the sensor with a cotton swab to test if the error disappears.

5. Service the Printer

If none of the above steps work, the door sensor may be faulty and require repair.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
