HP OfficeJet Pro 9018 All-in-One Printer

My printer is giving me the following error: The print cartridge cannot move. Open the cartridge access door, clear any paper or obstruction, and select "OK".

I have done this. There is no (never was) any obstruction. I continue to get the same error over and over again.

Hi @DWDConsulting,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error you're encountering with your HP OfficeJet Pro 9018 All-In-One Printer, where it indicates that the print cartridge cannot move, can be caused by several factors despite no visible obstruction. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Reset the Printer:

  • While the printer is on, unplug the power cord from the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and check if the error persists.

Check the Carriage Path:

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Gently move the cartridge carriage to the center of the printer.
  • Look for any small pieces of paper, debris, or broken parts inside the printer and remove them if found.
  • Ensure the carriage can move freely across the width of the printer.

Inspect the Cartridges:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • Check for any visible damage or debris on the cartridges.
  • Reinsert the cartridges securely into their respective slots.

Clean the Carriage Path:

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the carriage path for any tiny obstructions that might not be easily visible.
  • Carefully clean the path using a lint-free cloth.

Update the Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure the printer firmware is up to date. You can download the latest firmware from the HP support website.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • If the above steps do not resolve the issue, there might be a hardware problem. Inspect the printer for any signs of damage or wear.

Perform a Semi-Full Reset:

  • This reset can sometimes resolve more persistent issues. However, be aware that this may reset some of your printer settings to default.
  • Unplug the power cord while the printer is turned on.
  • Hold down the "OK" button and the "Help" button (or the buttons indicated for your model) simultaneously.
  • Plug the power cord back in while holding the buttons, then release the buttons once the printer powers on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
