@louisenbr2, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
It sounds like your printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 6978) is having some communication issues with your MacBook Air, even though the cartridges are full, and other functions like scanning and copying are working.
Check Printer Connection
USB or Wireless?: Make sure your MacBook is properly connected to the printer, whether via USB or Wi-Fi. If it's a Wi-Fi printer, double-check that both devices are on the same network.
Reboot: Restart both your MacBook and the printer. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve communication issues.
Reset the Printer
Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
Reset Settings: On your printer’s control panel, go to the settings and try to reset the network settings (if it's a wireless connection). This can sometimes fix issues like this.
Update Printer Drivers
HP Software: Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed for your printer. You can visit the HP Support page and download the latest macOS drivers for your printer model.
Software Update on MacBook: Ensure your macOS is up-to-date, as sometimes newer updates might include bug fixes for printer compatibility.
Delete and Reinstall Printer
Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
Remove your printer by selecting it and clicking the minus (-) button.
Re-add it by clicking the plus (+) button and selecting the printer again from the list.
Check Printer Queue
Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
Select your printer, and check if there are any stuck jobs in the print queue. If there are, clear them and try printing again.
You can also try cancelling all print jobs by right-clicking on the printer in the list and selecting “Reset Printing System.”
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. Follow the prompts to diagnose and fix common printing issues.
Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)
- Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.
I hope this helps.
