HP Envy 6458 - I have carts that were purchased directly from HP that the printer does not seem to like.  Can I turn off the protection capability on the printer or how can I make them work?

@Bosunbloo, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your Troubleshooting HP Cartridges: HP Envy 6458!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you are encountering issues with your HP Envy 6458 printer not recognizing or having problems with cartridges purchased directly from HP, there are several steps you can take to address this issue:

Reinstall the Cartridges:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer and reinstall them to ensure they are seated correctly.
  • Make sure to remove any plastic tape or packaging materials from the cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, wait about 10 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn the printer on again.

Update the Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates and install the latest firmware by visiting the HP Support Page.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Confirm that the cartridges are genuine and compatible with your HP Envy 6458 model.

Cartridge Cleaning:

  • Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the printer using a lint-free cloth.

Printer Error Messages:

  • Check the printer screen for specific error messages. Follow any instructions provided on the screen to resolve errors.

HP Cartridge Protection

HP printers can have a feature called "Cartridge Protection", which prevents the use of cartridges that were previously used in another printer. If you need to disable this feature, you can typically do this via your printer software or settings. Here’s how you can manage or disable cartridge protection settings:

Disable Cartridge Protection

Access Printer Software:

  • On your computer, open the HP printer software or the HP Smart app.

Navigate to Printer Settings:

  • Find the settings related to cartridge protection. This is usually located under printer maintenance or supply settings.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Turn off the cartridge protection feature and save the changes.

Restart Printer:

  • After changing the settings, restart your printer to ensure the new settings are applied.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
