I just hooked up my officejet 3830 and it will not print in color. The test page will print in color but when printing anything else even with color print checked it prints in greyscale.

Hi @Marlena411,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer prints the test page in color but all other documents print in grayscale, here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer Settings

In the Application:

  • Open the document you want to print.
  • Go to File > Print.
  • Click on Printer Properties, Preferences, or Settings (the wording depends on the application).
  • Ensure the following:
    • Color Printing is selected (not grayscale or black & white).
    • The paper type is correct (e.g., plain paper, photo paper, etc.).
    • Best Quality or appropriate settings for color printing are enabled.

Default Printer Settings (Windows):

  • Press Windows + S, type Control Panel, and open it.
  • Go to Devices and Printers > Right-click your printer > Select Printing Preferences.
  • Check the settings to ensure:
    • The Print in Grayscale option is turned off.
    • Color mode is selected.

2. Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Printers, right-click your printer, and choose Update driver.
  • If updating doesn’t resolve the issue:
    • Uninstall the printer:
      • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
      • Right-click the printer and select Remove device.
    • Download the latest driver for the HP OfficeJet 3830 from the HP Support website and reinstall the printer.

3. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
    • It will automatically diagnose and fix common printer problems, including color printing issues.

4. Check the Ink Levels

  • Open the HP Smart app or the printer software on your computer.
  • Check the color ink cartridge levels. Low ink can sometimes cause issues even if the test page prints fine.

5. Clean the Printhead

  • Access the printer's control panel or use the HP Smart app to perform a printhead cleaning.
  • This can resolve clogs that might prevent color ink from printing.

6. Check Application or Document Settings

  • If the issue occurs with a specific document or application:
    • Open a different file in another application and try printing in color.
    • Ensure the application settings don't override printer settings (e.g., Excel, Word).

7. Test Print from Another Device

  • Print from a different computer or smartphone to rule out issues with your computer

If the issue persists after these steps, let me know for further troubleshooting!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
