I have had this printer for some years now, but it doesn't seem to allow non-OEM toner cartridges anymore. Since the OEM cartridges are out of my price range, I would like to use the printer as a monochrome printer only by disabling the printer from verifying the color cartridges. I understand some printers allow this – is it possible with the C480W? My search of the net has come up empty so far.

The way that laser printers work, no you cannot simply remove the color toners. There are various electronic circuits that rely on the resistance created by having 4 cartridges installed to create proper images.

So if it requires the color toner cartridges to be valid, is there any way I can get a previous firmware software so it will accept no-name color toner cartridges?

If that is not possible, and there is no way to make the printer a black-and-white monochrome printer, I will have to dispose of this printer because the OEM cartridges are too expensive for me.

So, it turns out there there is at least one website that has old versions of firmware – https://orpys.com/en/content/27-sl-c-series. I haven't downloaded any yet, but thought others might like to know about it, however it turns out.
