OSX Catalina driver for SCX-3504W

The official HP drive instructions for this printer and Catalina are terrible. The HP website tells you that the printer is not supported. That's not true. As other threads in this forum have pointed out, and HP's own docs pages say (elsewhere), while there is no specific driver for this printer, there are more than enough other compatible drivers that can get this printer to work, at least over USB (not wifi, I assume).

There is no entry for the SCX-3405W on this page, but there is one for the SCX-3401 which is compatible. There is a table with the printer drivers for each model on this page. It says that SL-M2070 is compatible to all SCX-3401-like printers. The installation instructions are hard to find, scroll to the very end of the page, at the bottom  are the instructions.

In short, search the HP website for the driver for SL-M2070 for Catalina, download and install it. This will be a generic printer driver. It recognizes your SCX-34xx printer. BUT: instead of using the defaults, go to "Printers & Scanners" settings in OSX, add a printer, use the basic Samsung printer driver, but in the dialog box, at the end, under "Use:" do not select the SCX-3400 (that's confusing, isn't it?) but select the ML2070 printer. Enter a name for this new printer. For me, this solution is working great. I didn't have to buy another printer. I use it every day.

However, I don't think there is any way to make the scanner work. But I've been using my phone and a scanning app for years for that, it's easier and faster.
