I have a Samsung M2020W laser printer bought in 2016 with V3.00.01.08 firmware, according to synchthru it is of 2013, it refuses to upgrade to another firmware V3.00.01.23 on HP website, also from USB not just syncthru, is there any firmware available, also that allows to use non original Samsung toner, would it make sense.

If your non-OEM cartridges do not adhere to legal requirements (many do not) then any firmware update is likely to "break" non-OEM cartridges. Non-oem cartridges will work if they are fitted with the appropriate chip but many vendors do not use them because legal compatible chips are expensive and cut into their margins.
