Hope someone can help me fix my father-in-law's printer......

Whatever he sends to the printer comes out as a black page (not blank)

I've removed and re-installed the drivers etc. etc. but nothing appears to fix the problem.

In a previous post "Printer_S" (level4) posted a link to the latest firmware ....

"Here is the file and can only be used from a Windows computer or via Wireless from other device.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/SS/ML-1865W/ML1865W_V3.00.01.10.zip "

which I though might fix the issue but the firmware updater software just doesn't appear to run....

I've tried all the compatibility options in Windows 10 with and without admin privileges but the best I can get an approval request to run the software and, sometimes, a flash on the screen when the updater runs.

Anyone with any idea how to fix the problem or should he just ditch the printer and get a new one (preferably NOT one of HPs)

Cheers,

George

I see I'm a bit late to the party here but perhaps this is still of use.

First, such a problem boiling down to firmware is very unlikely in my opinion. If there was such a problem with a firmware it would never reach the customers. The chance that a firmware has such a bug that only appears in combination with a certain computer (& set of software) sending the print command is there but it is extremely slim.

Now, about the black pages. Is the black nice and even or rather patchy?

More importantly, is there any readable text at all or is it indeed all just black (with no visible letter shapes whatsoever)?

Thanks for responding....

The pages are an even black, no text or images at all.

I  suspect a faulty ”High Voltage Power Supply PCA" or “DC Controller PCA" and, even if I could source the parts, the cost and effort to fix it isn't likely to be economically viable when a new printer would cost less. Besides, as he lives 170 miles away the current "lockdown" prevents me from visiting in person.

Pity as he's just spent close to £40 on a new cartridge 😢 but he now has a nice shiny new Canon ..... 😁

Ok, in that case I believe you made the right call indeed.
