Starting print/scan job sends reset to Samsung printer which crashes HP computer

SL-M2880FW
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

HP-66010f is plugged into APC UPS. SL-M2880FW is plugged into power strip. When you start a scan/print job it sends a reset to the printer to wake it up - which just recently started to crash the printer. Two are connected by USB (running through a hub). Is it the printer, the computer, or the UPS?

Is the power strip plugged into the UPS? If so, chances are is the printer puts too much load on the UPS and it cuts out, possible because the battery on the UPS is dead, good possibility if over 4 years old. Printers should always be connected directly to a wall outlet and never into a surge bar or UPS. The only acceptable device is a voltage regulator that has enough capacity to support the inrush current that a printer draws when starting up.
