Hello everyone,

I have been the proud owner of a SAMSUNG SCX-3405W multifunction printer for over 10 years. Well, not for a few days. After printing two pages, it went into curtain mode. The “Status” light went steady red, and the “Toner” light steady yellow-orange.

The documentation lists a number of possible causes: end-of-life toner, paper jam, open cover, incompatible cartridge...

In fact, no. It was working and then it stopped. The cartridge is practically brand new and SAMSUNG. I've never bought a compatible.

On the PC, when printing, I get the message: “The toner cartridge is not installed. Please install the cartridge”.

Could it be that the cartridge's microchip is burnt out? Or is the printer at the end of its life? I'd like to know if anyone has ever encountered this problem on this printer, and if it can be saved (we can always dream...).

Thank you for your feedback.

Easiest way to test is install the old cartridge and see if it is read. If yes, you have a bad cartridge, if no then either the chip reader in the printer is damaged or is not making contact correctly with the cartridge. Contacts and springs do wear over time and the pressure that they exert on the components they interact with lessens. Manually inspect to make sure everything is in the proper place.

Thank you for your reply... The contacts have been cleaned and are working fine.
Yes, it would be nice to test the old cartridge, but I've sent it back to SAMSUNG for recycling! I'd have to buy another one, which might not be any use if the printer breaks down.
A fault in the chip reader could be a clue. Can it be repaired, and is it worth it?

Likely the reader is replaceable. But if the issue turns out to be the main board and not the sensor that will create a larger repair bill. Best bet is to search the internet for a service manual or parts list so you can see if that is even available. For older products Ebay is probably your friend for parts.

Hello,
I have not been able to find the schematic of the printer, nor have I found the spare part on ebay that one could try to change... So I think this search is futile and probably financially uninteresting. I'm going to buy a new printer.
Thanks for your help!
