phone goes to fax after 2 rings

I hooked up the incoming phone line from the charter router phone output into the line in on the printer and the line out to the desk phone.  When a incoming call comes in, it rings 2x and then I get a fax tone.  The manual is unclear.  I am unable to use my answering machine or get any incoming phone calls.  Haven't tried to get a fax yet, so I don't know if it works at all.

I will try and help.Normally the default rings is 2 before answering the line.On the printer itself you will have to go and change the settings under fax setup sometimes advance setup.You will find the ring count and also the receive mode like ans/fax ,manual receive ,auto receive and some more settings.Just change what is what you need and it should work.Sorry if not clearly explained but haven't had a fax setup lately.Hope this will help.
