This is really a public service announcement to those Googling for this. I, too, purchased this printer thinking it would have the checkbox for two-sided manual scanning and was surprised to find it no longer exists. This certainly should be a feature added into the app (along with several other now missing scanning app features such as the ability to scan multiple pages and automatically save as different files).
However, a BIG change that was introduced in the HP Smart App as I've discovered is the ability to re-arrange pages after they've been scanned in with the Preview pane. In the previous application, the pages could NOT be re-ordered as many of discovered after scanning in 60 page documents only to have to redo the whole thing 😞
This is really only a silver lining as those of us doing massive scan jobs then have to manually re-order the whole stack once it's scanned in but it's better than nothing. Had I known all this, I would have paid the extra $50 and got a 8K or 9K series instead but I've waited long past the return period for the printer.
So, in short, you scan the front side of the pages, then click the button to add more pages, so we flip the stack around and put in back in the feeder, then re-organize all the scanned in pages to reflect the final product.

Had no idea that the full software suite was still available...that certainly did the trick for me, thank you!
Appears they've added a couple new features to the full app as well including the page reordering and ability to straighten misaligned scans on a per page basis.
