Laser Jet Pro MFP M428fdn. Love this product. Copier is FINE. Printing is FINE.

Problem, the scanner is no longer working. It sounds like the gears are slipping, making a horrible sound.  I cleaned the rollers. There is no paper jam.

Is there a part I should replace?

Hi @RobbySB, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdn scanner is making a gear-slipping noise, it likely indicates a mechanical issue with the scanner assembly or ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) rollers/gears.

Possible Causes:

  1. Worn-out ADF Pick-Up or Separation Rollers – Even if cleaned, they may be worn down and need replacement.
  2. Broken ADF Gears – If a gear inside the ADF mechanism is cracked or misaligned, it can cause slipping.
  3. Scanner Belt Issue – The scanner uses a belt to move the scanning bar. A loose or damaged belt could cause unusual noises.
  4. Obstruction in ADF Path – A small, unnoticeable piece of paper or debris might be caught in the mechanism.

Steps to Troubleshoot:

Check ADF and Flatbed Scanning

  • Does the noise occur only with the ADF or both ADF and flatbed scanning?
  • If it's only ADF, the issue is likely with ADF rollers/gears.
  • If it's both, the scanner belt or internal motor/gears may be at fault.

Inspect ADF Rollers & Gears

  • Open the ADF cover and look for loose or cracked gears.
  • If the rollers feel smooth or have lost grip, consider replacing them.

Test Without Paper

  • Run a scan without placing paper in the ADF.
  • If the noise persists, the issue is internal (gears or motor).

Perform a Scanner Reset

  • Power off the printer.
  • Disconnect it from power for 1-2 minutes.
  • Reconnect and power it back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

In my extensive experience, once you are having the grinding issue the only resolution if you cannot find something stuck in the gears is to replace the ISA unit, which is the integrated scanner assembly. Basically the whole top half of the unit.

Ouch! Sounds expensive and above my pay grade. I ordered Replacement Tray 2 separation rollers #RM2-5397-000CN and
Replacement Tray 3 separation rollers #RM2-5745-000CN

When they arrive, I will try to make the replacement on my own. If that doesn't work, I will have to come up with Plan B
