i have a 3 year old HP Deskjet Printer, Model 3735.  I was trying to scan a document this morning and only a black page came out.  When I tried to copy the document, I got the same result.  The printer function is still working fine.  What is causing the black pages and how can I rectify this?

Defective scanner. If the print is fine, the scanner part is defect.

This reply isn't remotely helpful.  Clearly there is some defect/issue with the scanner.  What I was asking is if anyone has any practical advice as to what steps I can take to try to rectify the problem rather than someone simply telling me the scanner is defective.
