Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Hi

I had the same reservations of re-installing and then not being able to connect at all.  In the end I gave it a go and it worked without a problem!   Your printer must be a very close model to mine (Envy 5544) so I would definitely try uninstalling HPSmart and then downloading from Microsoft store.

Thank you Jools343, I uninstalled the HP Smart and reinstalled it via the Microsoft Store as you said. All is now working lovely, thank you very much for your help and advice.  Hopefully other HP users in the same situation will see this post and help them to rectify their problem.

I used to be able to use HP Scanning software locally from my computer for my HP Desk Jet 3632.  It worked seemlessly and perfectly.  However, they seem to have upgraded and now I am forced to use only the HP Smart App, which I used to be still able to use locally.  Didn't like the new app, but managed to make it work for me.  Now it wants me to sign into the cloud and won't allow me to scan unless I sign into the cloud.  I'm not interested in signing into the cloud .... I just want to scan it to my computer.  How do I avoid having to scan to the cloud?

After uninstalling/reinstalling multiple times, followed this advise to uninstall HP Smart and go to Microsoft Store to reinstall/download. This actually worked! My printer is an HP Envy 4520. Thanks for this tip!!!

An additional thought to try...be sure to sign in to your HP account.  Since this is HP Cloud that may be the hindrance to many of us with this problem.  If it is important it would be nice to have the reminder included in HP Smart to sign in and save users lots of angst!

Signing into my HP account gets me past the hangup, and lets me scan. My question is like others mentioned though. Why do I have to login to an online HP account and load HP Cloud Services just to scan something on my scanner directly to my PC. I'm not sure what all is going to HP during this process, but IMO should be absolutely nothing.

I have the same issue - was this ever answered?
