Cannot scan to A5

I have recently bought a Laser Jet Pro M283.  I want to scan to A5 (like I used to with my old HP Deskjet 8610 - recently deceased) and have previously used Adobe Acrobat Pro to manage and configure the scanning by using the 'custom scan' feature.  Unfortunately, with the Laser Jet, the option to configure the size is greyed-out, so I cannot specify scan size using Adobe.  I have tried HP Smart, but that has no A5 option.  The only way seems to be to crop an A4 scan, but this is messy, slow and often does not work (changes are not saved).  Does anyone have any suggestions please.

Can you download and install the FULL featured printer software from HP for your operating system:

Once you have downloaded and installed the FULL feature software, you will be able to print and scan.

Use the Custom Scan from the Software (set it as A5 size) or select any sizes from the drop down menu:

Hi,

Thank you for the information.  That has certainly solved the scan size issue - using the custom option I can now scan to A5.  The only remaining issue with this software is that I cannot scan multiple photos to the same file - there appears to be no option to continue scanning to the same file.  It means I have to scan each page as individual scans then use Acrobat to stitch them together.  Unless I'm missing something?

Glad to hear that your issue is resolved and all is working well now.

For scanning photos, if you would like to save them to the same file (PDF file), then you can scan the photos (like a document) and then Add pages.    Use only the Flatbed scanner when scanning photos (select Source as "Flatbed")

However, most photos are scanned as JPEGs and here's an example on how you can scan multiple photos and save as individual JPEGs.

Thank you again - my scanning is transformed!

One observation I would make is that the scanned image from the Laser Jet Pro MFP283 is outstanding - way better than from any printer/scanner I've previously owned.
