Thank you.  I was able to change both settings.  However, I am still receiving a communication error (#344) when I try to fax a document.   I've only started receiving this communication error recently.  I was able to fax documents without any problems.

Do you have any suggestions?

You are welcome.

The fax unit in the printer can fail - it is very rare that it would do so but it can happen.

Nothing I can offer is likely to make you happy.

Guessing is a poor diagnostic method.

Opinion

It is less likely the actual printer / fax than it is "something" else.

For example,

  • Squirrel chewed wires.  Squirrels and other rodents chew on all sorts of things.  Have a small phone box on the property (likely located outside the house where the lines leave the property)?  Water or even bees can get inside and cause all sorts of fun.
  • Old, brittle, generally damaged line(s) - phone line noise - data transmission will fail before your voice transmission.
  • Wiring under your house / office is failing for any of the reasons mentioned and many that are not.
  • Loose connection "somewhere" either in your property or "anywhere" else between your phone line and the destination.   Loose is not as bad as damaged but the results can look the same.
  • Distant Phone Lines - Fire Damage OR Water Damage, even Heat Damage .... which one just depends on which side of the country you live in.  Severe weather is a hazard and can affect data transmission even if your physical location is not on top of the area in which the damage is obvious.  This is really the same as "generally" damaged phone lines in the sense that you cannot know why, where, how, to what extent, any of the phone lines are serviceable.

The Fax Test only checks one connection path.

We just went through something similar except in our case, the fax and then the phone line failed completely after a few days.  This time, the cause was traced to damaged a phone line under the house.  We repaired the wiring and service was restored.  Easy solution in the sense that the damage was localized - no need to involve the local phone company.

If you have more than one landline in the property, try another line / connection.

Easiest of all, buy a new two-wire phone cord to try.  Amazon will ship one to you in a couple of days.

Call someone (no pun intended) that you know and bounce ideas.    Send that person a test fax.

How can I tell if the fax unit in the printer has failed?  I have no problem receiving faxes.

HP Recommended

@fonsecg

If you can receive faxes, the fax unit in the printer is functional.

It is very rare that the actual fax hardware fails - it can happen, of course - anything can break.

If you cannot send a fax to one individual recipient, it might be a failure in the transmission path (miles of wires between your location and the destination).  The failure could be a result of the equipment at the destination.  Neither of these are in your control (you know this).

@Repairatrooper

Any additional wisdom to impart?

Thanks!

If fax works one direction and not the other there are two possibilities

1. You have a bad fax line. Find an old style phone and connect it and try to make a voice call. If you can call both ways then you have a fax issue, if you cannot voice call you need to talk to your phone line supplier.

2. In some cases, surges on the phone line lock up the fax module or corrupt the firmware. Try a factory restore on the unit.

There is a phone on the line already.  It is a VOIP phone line (Vonage).  I can make and receive phone calls and I can receive faxes.  Up until I made my first post, I was sending faxes as well, with almost no problems.

User Guide explains the VOIP limitation and possible ways to get the fax to work.
