Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have always adjusted the size of my copies to 80% or 70%.  Now every time I try to adjust smaller it moves the copy to the left upper corner, and I can't change the margins like before.  I don't know if this is a computer windows 10 update or an HP update that has caused this.  It's driving me crazy now.  Anyone have an idea what happened?

@JER39, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
We understand that you are facing this issue post update.
This kind of issue can sometimes stem from a Windows update, a driver or HP Smart app update, or even changes in the default print/copy settings after updates. Here’s a breakdown of what likely happened and how you can try to fix it:

🧠 What Likely Happened:

A recent Windows 10 or HP software update may have reset or changed:

  • HP printer drivers
  • HP Smart app behavior
  • Print/Copy scaling and margin defaults

Some HP printers, after updates, stop honoring custom scaling/margins in the way they used to—especially through the Copy or Scan settings.

Try These Steps (in this order):

Use HP Printer Embedded Web Server (EWS) or Control Panel (if available)

  • If your printer has a screen or web interface, try adjusting Copy Settings directly on the printer rather than through the HP Smart App or Windows.
  • Look for options like:
    • Reduce/Enlarge
    • Scaling
    • Margins or Layout

Change Scaling Settings via Windows Print Dialog

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click your printer and select Printing Preferences.
  3. Go to the Effects or Features tab (depends on model).
  4. Set Scaling to:
    • 80% or 70%
    • Also try turning “Fit to Page” OFF.
  5. Click Apply, then OK.

HP Smart App Workaround

  • If you're using HP Smart, try:
    1. Open HP Smart > Copy > Click Settings (gear icon).
    2. Adjust Resize > Custom > Enter 80%.
    3. Under Layout or Margins, try choosing:
      • Center
      • Fit-to-page
    4. If it’s still off, try switching to “Original Size” instead of Auto Detect.

⚠️ Some recent HP Smart updates are known to override the centering/margin behavior when a scale less than 100% is used.

Reinstall HP Printer Drivers (Manual Method)

  1. Go to Device Manager > Uninstall your printer under “Printers”.
  2. Download Full Software + Drivers for your specific model from HP’s official website.
  3. Reinstall and disable Windows automatic driver updates temporarily:
    • Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > Select No.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
