It is likely the Copy function does not support the page / paper size of the original document.

The  User Guide describes the Copy feature as a simple "Place item on glass" and press button affair.

There is a hint of "other settings" but no detail about whether there is any way to Resize the output.

What else?

If the paper you are using does not match the size of the item you are copying, the results might be unexpected.

What to do?

Use Scan instead of Copy to control more of the options available to capture the content of the original document / item.

The extent to which Scan can handle the output depends on the device and the Operating System you are using.

For example, HP Smart on Windows might be much "smarter" than using HP Smart in Android.

Considerations

Scan Size Maximum (flatbed, metric)216 x 297 mm
Scan TypeFlatbed
Scanning Options (ADF)No ADF

The original document I am copying is 8.5x11, and am wanting it copied onto 8.5x11 paper. I placed the document on the designated placement on the scanner bed.

OK.

The EWS / Copy Default option might NOT be available on your printer - takes less than a minute to check...

IF the printer is connected to the network,

IF the Embedded Web Server (EWS) is available,

And

If the option in EWS is available to adjust the Copy Defaults,

try that.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Copy > Settings > Default SettingsCopy Defaults (wording can vary)

What else?

If you think the printer is at fault, Reset / Restart the printer.

Step 2: Restart the printer

Step 3: Update the Firmware

What else?

Same original answer > Use Scan

This will be more or less adaptable / possible depending on the unknown device and Operating System you are using.

When scanning using HP Smart on a device that supports the option,

Set the Scan Area to "Letter" or  Entire Scan Area
