Hi @Mhilinski73,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your scanner is displaying "scanner unavailable," it could be due to several reasons such as connection issues, driver problems, or software conflicts. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

1. Check Physical Connections

  1. Verify Power and Connection:
    • Ensure that your scanner is properly plugged into a power source and turned on.
    • If it’s a standalone scanner or part of an all-in-one printer, make sure the USB or network cable is securely connected to both the scanner and your computer.

2. Restart Devices

  • Turn off the scanner, unplug it, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart your computer to refresh the connection between the scanner and the computer.

3. Check Network Connection

For Network Scanners:

  • Ensure that your scanner is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.Print a network configuration page from the printer to verify the network status.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi:

  • If there are connectivity issues, reconnect the scanner to the Wi-Fi network.

4. Update or Reinstall Scanner Drivers:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.Select your scanner and click the Remove (-) button.

Download and Install Latest Drivers:

  • Visit the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page.Enter your scanner model and download the latest drivers and software for macOS Sonoma 14.5 (M1 chip).Install the drivers and restart your computer.

5. Check Scanner Software

  • Ensure that you have the latest version of the HP Easy Scan or HP Smart app installed on your computer.Open the app and try to scan a document.Check for updates to the scanning software in the App Store or via the HP website.

6. Reset the Printing System:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and select Reset printing system.
  • Confirm the reset and then re-add your scanner by clicking the Add (+) button.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
