Doc scans have vertical blue lines across entire page similar to bar codes

Product: Deskjet Ink advantage 2676
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Using a Dell folio notebook running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.  Printer is Deskjet Ink Advantage model 2676.  Using HP Smart for printing and scanning.  Printing is normal  However when I scan a document and choose colour, the output page is covered with vertical blue lines right across and down the full length of the page.  The lines are of consistency similar to a bar code pattern.

This does not happen if I choose gray (sic) scale in HP Smart prior to scanning - the output is normal in monochrome.  

I don't use the scanner very often - perhaps once a month.  Last time I used it there was no problem scanning in colour.

Would appreciate any insights into the problem - one of Microsoft's interminable updates perhaps?
