I keep gettinga "Document Feeder Issue" when trying to scan using my HP 250 All-in-One Mobile Printer. It feeds the document, but doesn't display the scan on the computer. I'm connecting to a Dell 7720 Laptop in Windows 11 using a USB cable.

Hi @dfeaver1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is when your HP OfficeJet 250 Mobile All-in-One Printer feeds the document but doesn’t show the scan on your Dell laptop, especially when you’re ready to get work done. Let’s fix this step by step.

Step 1: Clean the ADF Rollers and Separator Pad

Dust or paper fibers can cause misfeeds even if the paper goes through.
Here’s how to clean:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the ADF cover.
  3. Locate the paper pick rollers and separator pad.
  4. Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water (not dripping wet).
  5. Wipe the rollers and pad gently.
  6. Leave the cover open for 2 minutes to dry completely.
  7. Close the cover, reconnect the power, and turn the printer back on.
(Imagine the smooth feel of the rollers after cleaning, like giving your printer a fresh start!)

Step 2: Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power it on again.
(Think of this as a deep breath for your printer resetting its memory.)

Step 3: Check Scan Settings in Windows

  1. Open the HP app or Windows Fax and Scan.
  2. Make sure the scan source is set to Document Feeder (not Flatbed).
  3. Try scanning again.

Step 4: Update/Reinstall HP Software

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hello,

Understood. I’m going to be very precise here, because the HP OfficeJet 250 Mobile All-in-One (often called “HP 250 Mobile”) has a very specific ADF + Windows behavior, and what you’re seeing is a known failure mode, not user error.

I’ll explain why it feeds but fails, then give you the correct fix path.

What the symptom tells me (key insight)

“It feeds the document, but doesn’t display the scan on the computer”
“Document Feeder Issue”

This means:

  • The ADF motor and rollers are working

  • The printer starts the scan

  • But the scan never completes or never hands off to Windows

That narrows it to ADF sensor + driver communication, not paper, not hardware jam.

Important clarification about this model

The HP OfficeJet 250 Mobile:

  • Has a very simple ADF

  • Uses HP Scan / HP Smart for scan handoff

  • Is extremely sensitive to:

    • USB scan drivers

    • Windows 11 permissions

    • WIA vs TWAIN selection

On Windows 11, this breaks easily after updates.

Root cause (what’s actually failing)

In almost all cases like this, one of the following is true:

  1. Wrong scan driver is active (WIA only, no TWAIN)

  2. HP Smart cannot complete the scan handoff

  3. Windows 11 blocked scanner access permissions

  4. ADF page-detect sensor is not resetting fast enough

  5. USB scan service is stuck

The printer then throws a generic “Document Feeder Issue” even though paper moved.

Step 1 – Power + USB reset (must be done first)

This clears the scan subsystem state.

  1. Power OFF the printer

  2. Disconnect the USB cable

  3. Power OFF the laptop

  4. Wait 60 seconds

  5. Power ON the printer

  6. Power ON the laptop

  7. Connect USB directly (no hub)

Step 2 – Verify Windows 11 scanner permissions (critical)

Windows 11 blocks scanners by default sometimes.

  1. Settings → Privacy & Security

  2. Camera

    • Turn ON Camera access

    • Turn ON Let desktop apps access your camera

  3. Microphone

    • Same settings (HP scan uses it as an imaging device)

This step alone fixes many “ADF feeds but nothing happens” cases.

Step 3 – Remove HP Smart (important)

HP Smart often causes this exact symptom on the OJ 250.

  1. Settings → Apps

  2. Uninstall HP Smart

  3. Reboot

We are going to use HP Scan, not HP Smart.

Step 4 – Install FULL FEATURE driver (not basic)

This is the key fix.

  1. Go to HP Support

  2. Download Full Feature Software and Drivers for:

    • HP OfficeJet 250 Mobile All-in-One

  3. Install it

  4. Reboot when finished

This installs:

  • TWAIN scanner driver

  • HP Scan

  • Proper ADF handling

Step 5 – Scan using HP Scan ONLY (test)

Do not use:

  • Windows Scan

  • HP Smart

  • Third-party apps yet

Steps:

  1. Open HP Scan

  2. Select Document Feeder

  3. Scan 1 page only (test)

  4. Save locally (PDF)

If this works → driver issue confirmed and resolved.

Step 6 – Clean the ADF sensor (simple but important)

If the error still appears intermittently:

  1. Open the ADF lid

  2. Locate the small narrow glass strip

  3. Clean with:

    • Lint-free cloth

    • Glass cleaner or alcohol

  4. Dry completely

Even a small smudge can cause false “feeder issue”.

What this is NOT

  • Not a jam

  • Not paper thickness

  • Not a bad USB cable (unless disconnecting)

  • Not a failed motor

When this becomes hardware

If after all steps above:

  • HP Scan still errors

  • Flatbed scans work

  • ADF always feeds then fails

Then the ADF page-detect sensor is failing.

For this model:
➡️ ADF is not field-repairable
➡️ Only option = depot repair or replacement
