Hi @Chipper77,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
I understand you want to scan double-sided (duplex) documents on your HP Series 8020 printer. Let’s go through a few steps to enable this feature.
a. Check if Duplex Scanning is Supported
Ensure your model HP Series 8020 has a duplex automatic document feeder (ADF).
If it only has a flatbed scanner or single-sided ADF, double-sided scanning must be done manually.
b. Use HP Smart App for Duplex Scanning
Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
Select Scan → Scan Document.
If the ADF supports duplex, check the option Scan Both Sides or Two-sided Scanning.
c. Manual Double-Sided Scan (if ADF is single-sided)
Scan the first side of the document.
Flip the pages over and place them in the ADF to scan the other side.
The HP Smart app usually allows combining both scans into a single PDF automatically.
d. Adjust Scan Settings
In the HP Smart app or the printer driver, select Paper Size, Resolution, and File Format (PDF recommended for multi-page documents).
Ensure Combine into single file is selected to avoid multiple files.
e. Save or Share the Scan
After scanning both sides, review the pages, reorder if necessary, and save or send the final document.
I hope this helps.

Hi @Chipper77,
You're most welcome, and thank you for getting back!
If your printer does not show the option for two-sided (duplex) scanning, it means this model doesn't include a duplex ADF feature, so it cannot automatically scan both sides of a page.
Unfortunately, duplex scanning cannot be added through a download or software update, as it requires specific hardware inside the printer.
You can still scan double-sided documents manually by following these steps:
Place the first page(s) in the ADF and scan Side 1.
Flip the pages over, keeping the same order and alignment.
Scan Side 2.
In the HP Smart app, make sure the option “Add pages” or “Combine into a single PDF” is selected.
Reorder pages if needed, then save or share your final document.
This gives the same result as duplex scanning, just done manually.
I hope this helps.
