Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have had the printer for awhile and was able to scan to my computer wirelessly in the past.  Now, I can't.  I get the error, "Scanner reported an error.  An error occurred while communication with the scanner."    I use a iMAC M4 running Sequoia 15.3.1.  The printer and PC are connected and I can print and copy fine.  I have unplugged the printer and turned it on and off.  I have removed the printer from my MAC and reinstalled it multiple times.  I've downloaded the HP Easy Start s/w and went through the install process with no change.    My wife has an new MAC Book Pro with the M2 pro micro running the same s/w and it works fine for printing and scanning.   I've notice the post for this issue for a windows system and the process to perform a root level uninstallation for the printer driver.  Can that be done for a MAC and if so, can someone share the process?  I'd like to get back to wirelessly scanning to my computer?

@FlyerRM, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check Network Connection

  • Ensure both the printer and your iMac are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (Setup > Network > Wireless Settings).

Restart Both Devices

  • Power cycle both your printer and iMac. Turn off both devices, wait 30 seconds, and turn them back on.

Update macOS and Printer Software

  • Make sure your macOS is up to date (System Preferences > Software Update).
  • Go to the HP website and download the latest printer driver for macOS Monterey.

Remove and Reinstall Printer

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners on your iMac.
  • Remove the HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 by selecting it and clicking the minus button.
  • Re-add it by clicking the plus button, then selecting the printer from the list and ensuring it's the wireless version.

Reinstall HP Smart Software

  • Download and install the latest HP Smart software from the Mac App Store or the HP website.

Check Scanner Settings in HP Smart

  • Open HP Smart and ensure the scanner is set to connect to the printer correctly.

Run HP Printer Diagnostic

  • Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor (available from HP's support website) to diagnose scanning issues on macOS.

Check for Conflicting Software

  • If you have any firewall or security software installed, disable it temporarily to check if it’s blocking the connection to the scanner.

Reset the Printing System (Optional)

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click anywhere in the printer list and select Reset printing system.

Test Scanning with Another Application

  • Open Preview or Image Capture and try scanning directly from there to check if the issue is isolated to one app (like HP Smart).

Check Firewall/Network Settings

  • Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall and make sure it’s not blocking printer communications.
  • Check your router’s settings to ensure no firewall or network restrictions are blocking communication between the printer and your iMac.

I hope these steps help resolve the issue

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
