Hi @Princessginger,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you're having trouble faxing with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer,

here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue:

Check Fax Connections:

  • Ensure that the phone line is securely connected to the Line port on the printer and to the wall jack.
  • If you're using a VoIP service, make sure it supports faxing. Some VoIP services may require adjustments to settings or adapters to support faxing.

Verify Fax Settings:

  • Press the "Fax" button on the printer's control panel.
  • Check the settings such as the fax number, country/region settings, and any dialing prefixes or restrictions that may apply.
  • Make sure the printer is set to "Auto Answer" if you want it to pick up incoming faxes automatically.

Fax Quality and Signal:

  • Poor line quality can affect fax transmission. Check if you can make voice calls using the same phone line without issues.
  • If you hear noise or static on the line, contact your telephone service provider to check the line quality.

Test Fax Functionality:

  • Send a test fax to a known working fax machine to verify if the issue is with sending or receiving faxes.
  • You can also use the printer's built-in fax test to check its functionality. Look for an option like "Fax Setup" or "Fax Tools" on the printer's control panel.

Update Firmware and Software: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates through the printer's control panel or via HP's support website.
  • Make sure you have the latest printer driver and software installed on your computer. Sometimes, outdated software can cause faxing issues.

Reset or Restart the Printer:

  • Power cycle the printer by turning it off, unplugging it from power for about 30 seconds, and then plugging it back in.
  • Restart your computer and try faxing again after both the printer and computer have restarted.

Check Fax Memory:

  • If the printer's memory is full, it may not be able to receive new faxes. Check the printer's memory settings and clear out any stored faxes if necessary.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
