HP ScanJet Pro 4500 fn1

It seems to be impossible to update the firmware of my HP ScanJet Pro 4500 fn1. It's currently running Version 3, the one it was shipped with. For some reason, this version is unable to scan to shared folders on recent OS X versions. The HP support website suggests a firmware update. However, when I try to update the firmware to the most recent version 7.128, the embedded webserver tells me that the update failed. However, the scanner shows that it's updating, but after it reboots, it's still running the old firmware.

Actually, I start believing that the firmware 7.128 from the official support is somehow broken. It's a compressed .exe file, which I can't extract by execution. I can extract it using 7zip, but this gives me a folder structure I I'm not sure how to use. I tried uploading the .exe, which seems to accepted by the embedded webserver. However, the update fails as described above.

Anyone around who had the same trouble? I'd like to try the version 5 firmware as a transition path, but unfortunately HP does not provide it any more. There's just the current one, which doesn't work on top of the stock firmware.

By the way, I tried installing it from a recent IE and Chrome on Windows 10 and Chrome and Safari on my Mac OS 10.15 without success.

I'm really disappointing by this user experience. It's a rather expensive device meant to be used for business and I haven't used it much. I can't believe that it seems I have to throw it away. Would be the last HP product I purchased.
