message - turn off power and start again. Makes a nasty grinding noise.  Everything goes through the startup process until the scanner carriage returns to its start position but the gearing does not stop.  I cannot find a micro switch which might have jammed.

The scanner is dirty and it's cant be positioned. You need to remove the scanner and clean the internal mirrors with cotton swabs( I think there are 3 mirrors) and it will work fine. When you remove the scanner you will see that the mirrors are dirty, they have a thin layer of dust that needs to be cleaned.
