For a brief time I could get up to 1200 ppi scanning with HP scanning software. Now the maximum resolution is 300 ppi. I'm not sure whether a Windows update or firmware update change this, but I certainly would like to have the scanning meet the specifications. Is there a fix for this problem?

So, this was possibly operator error. 😁 When using the HP Scan software to scan, if the setting is  "Document feeder if loaded," then, the highest resolution is 300 dpi, which is always the highest for the document feeder. So, if you want higher resolution, when using the flatbed, always select for source: Flatbed.

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Firstly, let's update the printer's firmware, refer - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, follow the next steps: Download and run HP Print and Scan Doctor: Follow steps from the link: Click here

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for these suggestions. I had already updated the firmware and I thought I had run the HP Print and Scan Doctor. Nonetheless, I downloaded the software and unfortunately on the "Finding and Fixing Problems," it locks up at WIA scan. So, still only 300 dpi for this scanner - not fixed, yet.

Well, Print and Scan Doctor finally finished and problem of not getting more than 300 dpi is not solved.
