HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Suddenly my HP CADE 6400 all in one stopped "scanning" from the HP Smart Dashboard.  If I hit the print button on HP Smart it prints fine, adn if I hit the copy button on the printer, it still scans and prints the copy perfectly.  But if I hit the "Scan" button in HP Smart, I get an error saying:  "Couldn't Connect to Scanner"  HP Smart cannot scan from this printer, either no scanner was detected or HP Smart is not compatible with the scanner in this printer"

It had been workign fine for two years, then suddenly this just started.  I tried the HP Repair tools for PIirnt and Scan, rebooted, reinstalled software, reset wireless, etc.  But notheing works.   Please Help.

Hi @GregReiff,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues with scanning from the HP Smart app and you've already tried basic troubleshooting steps, here are some additional suggestions you can try to resolve the problem.

Check Connection:

  • Ensure that your HP printer is properly connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
  • If your printer is connected via USB, make sure the cable is securely connected.

Update Drivers and Software:

  • Ensure that you have the latest drivers and software installed for your HP printer. Visit the official HP website to download and install the latest software.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility. This tool can automatically diagnose and fix many common printing and scanning problems. You can download it from the HP website.

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service:

  • Make sure that the Windows Image Acquisition service is running. Press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Look for "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" in the list and ensure that it is set to "Automatic" and is running.

Firewall and Antivirus Settings:

  • Check your firewall and antivirus settings to ensure that they are not blocking the HP Smart app or the scanner.

Reinstall HP Smart App:

  • Uninstall the HP Smart app from your computer and then reinstall it. Sometimes, a fresh installation can resolve compatibility issues.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Make sure your operating system is up-to-date. Install any pending Windows updates.

Scan Using Windows Built-in Feature:

  • Try scanning using the built-in Windows scanning feature. Press Windows key + S, type "Scan" and select "Windows Scan." Check if you can scan using this alternative method.

Check Scanner Hardware:

  • Ensure that there are no hardware issues with the scanner. Check for any physical damage or obstructions that may be affecting the scanning functionality.

By going through these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the issue with the scanning functionality in HP Smart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
