@Erk5, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP DeskJet 2778 is pulling in paper but not printing anything even though the cartridges are filled and you're trying to scan, not print, here are a few steps to help resolve the issue:

Clarify the Task: Scan vs. Print

  • If you're trying to scan, printing shouldn't be involved. Please confirm:
    • Are you using the HP Smart app or another method to initiate the scan?
    • Is the printer connected via Wi-Fi or USB?

Check Printer Status

  • Make sure the printer is powered on, connected to your PC or mobile device, and shows Ready in the HP Smart app or Windows settings.

Try a Test Print

  • Even if you're scanning, it's good to verify the printer can print:
    • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers
    • Right-click your printer > Printer Properties > Print Test Page

Check Ink Levels and Cartridges

Scan Using HP Smart App

  • If scanning is the goal:
    • Open the HP Smart app
    • Tap Scan > Scanner > Start Scan
    • Ensure the document is placed correctly on the scanner glass.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit Official HP® Support
  • Download and install the latest firmware and drivers for your DeskJet 2778.

Reset the Printer

  • With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds, plug it back in, and turn it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
