HP E709 Officejet gives "FAX FAILURE" message when running Fax test

HP Recommended
HP E709
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP E709 Officejet Scanner/Printer/Fax machine, Windows 10 64-bit Dell computer.

When I run the Fax Test on the printer it immediately displays "FAX FAILURE" on the panel and emits 3-tones.

I used to be able to send faxes without any problems but now, when I try, the printer doesn't call out and the error message appears.

  Any ideas?

@djfred, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand. This is a hardware issue with the fax component in the printer. It has gone bad. Let us try these steps:

Reset the printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  2. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.

Update the printer firmware

If the error persists, this part cannot be replaced. Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.
