When i try to copy it gives me a message that photo tray is empty.  I tried filling photo tray, but selected 8 1/2 by 11 paper.  It copied onto the photo paper!  How do i regain copy function on standard paper.

Hi @cynthiaR1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it must feel when your Envy 5660 insists the photo tray is empty, especially after you’ve already refilled it and want to copy on plain paper. Let’s get that gentle hum and paper glide happening again with a few clear steps:

Step 1: Reset Tray Position

  1. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface to ensure the trays seat properly.
  2. Fully extend the output tray extender; you should feel it click into place.
  3. Pull out the main input tray, then remove the output tray entirely.

Step 2: Reseat the Photo Tray

  1. Inspect the grey guide tabs on the photo tray; they need to slide underneath the black guides of the main tray on both sides.
  2. If they aren’t aligned, gently reposition the photo tray, feeling it click under each guide. It should move smoothly with no unusual resistance.

Step 3: Reassemble and Test

  1. Replace the output tray, ensuring its edges line up flush with the input tray.
  2. Load a sheet of standard letter-size paper (8½ × 11") into the main tray.
  3. Attempt your copy operation again.
    • If the copy runs onto the correct tray, you're all set!
    • If the issue persists, proceed to Step 4.

Step 4: Bypass the Photo Tray

  1. Lift out the photo tray entirely; just remove it from the input tray.
  2. Run a copy job without it attached
    • Often, missing the tray forces the printer to default to the main tray, resolving the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
