Envy 7640 all-in-one

My HP Envy printer prints a document sent from a computer very quickly.

However, if I try to use it as a copier and copy a document from the glass, it prints very slowly.  It appears that it is reading each file being copied as a pricture and tries to print it borderless.

I tried changing copy settings to "draft",  also tried setting "enhancements" to "off" and then to "text" with no change.  I also tried to restart the printer (including unplugging it when it was off).

Note that this slow copying just started to happen, the printer previously copied quickly.

Any suggestions?

Hi @jfse,

Welcome to the HP Forums. Since the printer is printing as expected when printing from the computer, I suspect the issue has something to do with the copy settings. I can see you have made some changes to the settings but the issue persists. Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or is it in a surge protector or power bar? Even if you have been using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause.   Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector

In this document you will see, ISSUE: Problems or issues may arise when an HP LaserJet series printer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a power strip, or a surge protector

^ This is not limited to Laserjet printers.

If you already have the printer connected to a wall outlet, or if you move it and the issue persists,

please perform a hard reset. To do so, leave the printer on and unplug the power cable for 1 minute. While it is unplugged, hold down the power button on the printer for 10-15 seconds to release any built up power, then after the minute has passed, plug the printer back in.

If the issue continues, please choose the Copy option, then touch the Settings Icon. Here you will see the following settings:

  • 2 Sided Copy
    • 1:1

I tried all the suggestions provided, but copy speed is still painfully slow.  Again note that this is only the case for copying, printing a file sent from a computer is fine.

At this point, it might be best for you to call into support. What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number

Case number and phone number appear.

Please let me know whether the issue is resolved and/or the outcome of your call with phone support.

Feel free to post again if there is anything else I can help you with.

Steps provided by Sunshyn2005 (HP Support Agent) on 01-01-2016 03:34 PM was a total waste of time.  Usually when the support person doesn't have a clue it's because they have never experienced the problem and thus the suggested solution is nothing but a typical "Windows Response" of reset, reload, & repeat, which usually doesn't do anything but waste time.  So, if you come across a real solution please send it.  Thanks, RayCCAP

I was also suffering from the very slow copy issue with this printer, even after restoring the copy settings.  I found that after removing the color ink cartridge, copying became very fast.  So removing the color ink cartridge was a solution for me.  Of course, this means you can't make color copies.

this worked for me too ???  but I need to have color ???  slowness drives my husband crazy

@godchild1

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand the HP Envy 7640 has a slow printing issue,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you attempt a hard reset of your printer?

Did you check for any other HP Forum posts to help resolve your concern?

If you haven't, Here's a related HP Forums post that seems to have helped others: Click here for the steps.

While you check that out, here's a few things you can do:

Step 1: Reset the printer

Resetting the printer can resolve some types of slow printing issues.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

       NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Try to print. If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Check the print driver settings

Check the print driver settings. Selecting certain paper types or printing in Best quality can slow print speeds. Print with plain paper in Normal or Draft quality for faster print speeds.

  1. Search Windows for printers, and then click Devices and printers in the list of results.

  2. Double-click the icon for your printer.

  3. Double-click Set Preferences.

  4. Find the paper type information.

Keep me posted for further assistance 😉

Same issue here with the Envy.  A couple months after I bought it, it started copying slowly, hard reset worked the first time, now having the same issue again and hard reset is not working.  Printer is only 9-10 months old.  I don't really like this printer anyway but can't afford a new one and I make lots of copies for homeschooling.  I will try to take out color ink.

Removing the color cartridge worked for me as well. It's almost like in single-cartrige mode, it defaults to "draft" or "normal" mode but with the color cartridge in, even when printing in Black and White, it detaults to 1200 dpi or something like that so it scans each line VERY SLOWLY...

Pain in the _ss.... there's got to be a better solution out there.   HP... help?
