Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

HP Envy Photo 7155 all in one frequently makes a loud chattering and grinding noise when printing.  No paper jam found; cleaned roller heads with distilled water. Printing remains good but sounds like it is chewing up gears or parts.  No error messages indicated.  No new software or driver changes.  Use Wireless internet connection.  Computer is Mac desktop.

My symptoms are exactly the same as noted by first person to list this problem.  I have vacuumed the printer inside to remove any random paper "lint" and there are no error messages.  This has occurred for the past three months and only once (recently) did it result in a paper jam.  Usually happens on initial printing after sitting idle for a while.  Sounds like plastic gears not meshing correctly, but it eventually goes away and printing isn't interrupted.  My concern is that something is wearing away and the printer will eventually break.  Would appreciate HP response to help correct this problem.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,  I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I understand that your HP printer is producing loud noise while printing. To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did you make any changes to the settings of your Printer prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?
  • Have you tried any troubleshooting steps?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till the warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Also, try a firmware update: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

No loud noises after start up, hope it continues. Thank you. So is it still necessary to plug into wall socket vs surge protector as I had before?

thank you

@7Myne

Thank you for posting back.

I am glad to know that you managed to resolve the issue. To get the answer to this question, A surge protector is not the same thing as a wall socket.
I would suggest using a wall socket directly plugin will be the better option.

Actually just fouind reply from Echo_Lake and followed instructions provided.  Not sure what difference it makes regarding how my printer is plugged in but I'm willing to try the remedy suggested.  After following remedy I have printed some things out and there was no noise.  Note, however, that the grinding noise is intermittent, and I'm not yet convinced that the problem is fully resolved.  I will note that my printer was previously plugged into a multi-plug adapter (not an extension cord or surge protector) that allowed several devices to share one plug.  Per the recommended solution, I have now moved things around so that the HP printer has its own plug directly into the wall.  Hopefully these adjustments will prove to be result in a fully successful resolution to the problem.  Thanks to Echo_Lake for the helpful response.

To continue the feedback ... Actually, the chattering/grinding didn't stop after the proposed solution was applied, but I fear that this has escalated into another problem.  My double-sided printing has now stopped working and I fear that some internal component (a gear or sprocket?) has broken due to whatever was causing that noise.  All print settings show I am requesting double-sided (flip on long side) printing, but I can't get the printer to print two pages on the same sheet of paper.  When printing multiple pages the printer prints each page on a separate sheet of paper, although every other page is turned upside down - just like the printer thinks it has already fed the previous page back in and turned it upside down.  In addition, printing single pages results in a blank page being ejected first and then the desired page is printed on a separate sheet of paper.  This is truly getting frustrating.  Any ideas are appreciated.  Bob.
