HP envy inspire will not feed a doc  from the tay or copy a doc from the flat glass plate.

It will copy from computer.

When I lifted up the top of the printer a tiny plastic gear was lying on the glass plate.

Hi @Ciocia

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It seems like your HP Envy Inspire printer is experiencing a hardware issue, particularly with the document feeder and scanner bed.

The tiny plastic gear you found on the glass plate is likely part of the internal mechanism responsible for feeding documents or moving components during scanning. Here’s how you can address this:

1. Inspect the Gear

  • Carefully examine the gear for any visible damage or wear.
  • Check the area around the scanner bed and document feeder to see if you can identify where the gear might have come from. Look for loose or misaligned parts.

2. Test the Document Feeder

  • Place a single sheet of paper in the document feeder and gently push it to ensure it’s aligned properly.
  • Try using the Copy function to see if the feeder attempts to pull the paper. If it doesn’t, the gear may be critical to its operation.

3. Clean the Rollers

  • Open the document feeder and locate the rollers.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the rollers. This can help if the issue is related to dirt or debris.

4. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 2-3 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can clear temporary errors.

5. Update Firmware

  • Visit the HP Support website and download the latest firmware for your printer model. Firmware updates can resolve bugs and improve functionality.
