Scanner reported and error.  Failed to open a connection to the device (HP LaserJet).  If the device is a DeskJet, it works fine.

Hi @Dustie7,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

When encountering scanner connection issues with your HP LaserJet printer on a Mac, while your DeskJet works fine, there could be several reasons for this discrepancy. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

Step 1: Verify Scanner Software Installation

  1. Ensure Driver Compatibility: Make sure that you have installed the latest HP scanner drivers that are compatible with your macOS. Visit the Official HP® Support to check for drivers and software updates specific to your LaserJet model.

Step 2: Check USB/Network Connection

  1. Connection Type: Whether your HP LaserJet is connected via USB or network, check that the connection is secure.

    • For USB: Ensure that the cable is properly connected.

    • For Network: Verify that the printer is connected to the same network as your iMac.

Step 3: Examine System Preferences

  1. Printers & Scanners: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners. Select your LaserJet printer and ensure it's listed under both Printers and Scanners.

Step 4: Reset Printing System (if necessary)

  1. Reset the Printing System in Printers & Scanners by right-clicking in the sidebar and selecting Reset printing system. This will remove all printers and scanners, allowing you to add them again.

Step 5: Verify Firewall and Security Software

  1. Firewalls: Check that your Mac's firewall or any security software isn’t blocking the scanner. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall to adjust settings as needed.

Step 6: Use HP Easy Start (for guided setup)

  1. Download and run HP Easy Start from HP's Official HP® Support. It helps install the correct drivers and software. This tool may automatically resolve installation or connectivity issues for scanning.

Step 7: Test the Scanner Function

  1. After reconfiguring and verifying all settings, try using the Image Capture application (built into macOS) to see if it can connect to the scanner.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
