Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended
Product: HP OfficeJet Pro 8710

We have HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer which was working with scan to email until recent firmware applied to it. All the settings look correct:

  • SMTP Server is correct,
  • SMTP Port is 25 (our SMTP Server doesn't require SSL),
  • Server Authentication is set to Server does not require authentication,
  • Checkbox Always Use Secure Connection is unchecked.

But when trying to scan, it always shows following text: "Secure connection (SSL or TLS) failed. Check your settings and try again."

We have a lot of other Printers setup this way which are working fine but only the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 recently that have stopped working.

Adding more detail not sure if it might be a firmware issue on the devices.

@PenguinByte, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 firmware version WBP2CN2530AR (built 2025-07-25) appears to have introduced stricter enforcement of secure connections, even when SSL/TLS is explicitly disabled in the settings. This has affected scan-to-email setups using SMTP port 25 without SSL, which previously worked fine.

Recommended Workaround Options:

Option 1: Use SMTP Port 587 with STARTTLS

If your SMTP server supports STARTTLS on port 587, try the following:

  1. Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering its IP address in a browser.
  2. Go to Scan > Scan to Email > Outgoing Email Profiles.
  3. Update the SMTP settings:
    • SMTP Server: (your server)
    • Port: 587
    • Authentication: If not required, leave disabled.
    • Encryption: Enable STARTTLS (if supported).
  4. Save and test the connection.

If your server does not support STARTTLS or SSL, proceed to Option 2.

Option 2: Roll Back to Previous Firmware (WBP2CN2514AR)

Since the older firmware WBP2CN2514AR (built 2025-04-03) worked fine with port 25 and no SSL, you can downgrade the firmware manually.
 Important Notes:

  • HP does not officially support firmware downgrades.
  • You must disable automatic firmware updates to prevent reinstallation of the newer version.

Steps to Downgrade:

  1. Download the older firmware RFU file from a trusted source.
  2. Access the printer’s EWS via its IP address.
  3. Navigate to Settings > Printer Updates > Manage Updates.
    • Set Allow Downgrade to Yes.
    • Set Check Automatically to Off.
  4. Run the downloaded .exe file on a Windows PC connected to the same network.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to send the firmware to the printer.
  6. After the downgrade, restart the printer and reconfigure Scan to Email with port 25.

Prevent Future Auto-Updates

After rollback:

  • Go to EWS > Printer Updates and disable automatic updates.
  • Alternatively, block HP update servers via firewall if applicable.

Hi Max3Aj.

Do you have the older firmware in a trusted source surely HP have this available to customers.

HP Recommended

@PenguinByte, Yes, HP does provide official firmware downloads for the OfficeJet Pro 8710, but they typically only host the latest firmware version on their support site. Unfortunately, older firmware versions like WBP2CN2514AR are not always publicly listed once a newer version is released.
