When scanning using the document feeder, the result is always crooked.  I've tried making sure the guides are good on the feeder and also that I put the paper in the guides straight.  This has been since I got the printer.  But, the quality of the scans are not good.  (This is actually one of the least amount of it being crooked.

Places to check / adjust...

One main concern is that the printer has never properly scanned from the ADF.

This might indicate an issue with the hardware.

Might is the operative word, of course.

There are considerations:

  • Only plain paper should be used in the ADF - the expectation is that the paper is of standard / supported type and size.  Paper weight and the condition of the paper is important, too.  Paper that is too thin, too dry, curled, folded, or otherwise not "just so" can impact results.  No need to defend - simply check the paper quality and suitability...

  • If you have not done so for a while - do check and consider updating the Firmware

HP OfficeJet 8020/OfficeJet Pro 8020/OfficeJet Pro 8030 All-in-One Printer series Firmware Update

  • The printer should be plugged into an appropriate outlet (and not a surge protector).  This is important when you are testing scan operations - the power available to the printer and the connection stability can impact the results.

  • The ADF, the rollers, and related parts must be clean.  Again, if the hardware has never worked, then cleaning the ADF won't likely make a difference.  Nonetheless, assuming the printer is otherwise working as expected, it is worth your time to make sure the printer hardware is "at its best" in terms of not only the paper you are scanning but the cleanliness and readiness of the ADF.

Solutions are presented in the order to be considered / completed:

An 'Out of Paper' error displays, printer does not pick paper  (More complete cleaning options)

Automatic document feeder does not pick paper or feeds too many sheets

What else?

It's possible the printer needs the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software installed - OR uninstalled and reloaded.

If need help with that, ask...

What else?

If all else fails and you just want to get on with your life (and scanning),

HP Smart - Windows - supports editing and correcting the way the scans are oriented.

After the initial scan,

You can rotate the scan "a lot" or "a little" (a few degrees) before saving / printing / sharing the final results.

Note that the "Edit > Crop (and rotate)" feature works about the same for both documents and images.  That means that once you select to "Edit" the content, many of the same features (for example, Crop and rotate) are available for both types of content.

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Scan Document - Select "what's next" (Edit)

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Scan > Edit > Crop (and other options)
