HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP Officejet Pro 8710 all in one printer won't connect to my computer even though it's online, I lost my scan capability, and all of this conveniently started randomly happening when my warranty expired today.  I tried removing and installing, I rebooted, I checked for driver updates.  Not sure what I'm missing.

@LKoenig, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your frustration with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One printer. It's certainly not ideal when things stop working unexpectedly.

Let's work together to get your printer reconnected and your scanning functionality restored. We can often resolve these kinds of connectivity and software issues.

Check Printer Connection

Even if your printer is online, ensure it's properly connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your PC:

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Wireless Settings > Wireless Network Test Report.
  • Confirm the printer is connected to the correct network.

Use HP Smart’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

HP has retired the older "Print and Scan Doctor" tool. Instead, use the Diagnose & Fix feature in the HP Smart app:

  • Download or open the HP Smart app. HP Smart
  • Go to Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run and follow any prompts to resolve issues.

Reinstall the Full Feature Software

Sometimes, Windows updates or expired drivers can cause scan issues. Reinstall the full driver package:

  • Uninstall the current HP software from Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program.
  • Download and install the full software from HP official site: Official HP® Support

Enable ‘Scan to Computer’

This feature may have been disabled:

  • Open HP Printer Assistant (search in Start menu).
  • Go to Scan > Manage Scan to Computer.
  • Click Enable.

Check Windows Services

Ensure Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) is running:

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Right-click > Properties > Set Startup type to Automatic and click Start if it's not running.

Firewall/Antivirus Conflicts

Temporarily disable your firewall or antivirus and try scanning again. If it works, add HP Smart and related services to the exception list.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
