Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP Officejet Pro 6830 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP Officejet Pro 6830. After a recent Windows 10 update, my printer will print, but no longer scan or copy. It will not scan using the HP printer management utility that is on my computer, or through the HP Smart app; I get the error “Unable to communicate with the scanner.” (see below)

I have tried:

  1. Turning the printer on & off (including disconnecting it from power, then plugging it back in/turning it back on)
  2. Ensuring I had the most recent firmware update on the printer
  3. Ensuring I have the most recent print drivers installed
  4. Running the HP Print and Scan Doctor; when I run the “Fix” utility on the scanner, it gets stuck on the “Driver check”; the solution that is given is to remove power from the printer, plug the computer back in, and restart the computer. This does not work. (see below)

      5.  Removed, then reinstalled the printer:

  1. Removed the printer from my computer: (1) Uninstalled the printer in Settings>Printers and Scanners; (2) uninstalled all HP software (including HP Smart, HP Basic Device Software, and HP Update) using Settings>Add or Remove Programs; (3) Deleted the drivers in Device Manager>Printers by right clicking the HP Printer (and fax) individually and choosing “Ininstall”. I also went in file manager to C>Program files (x86)>HP and deleted the folders that were there. Then I deleted temp files in Control Panel, and deleted anything executable in my downloads, and cleaned out the recycle bin.
  2. Reinstalled the printer using HP Smart
  3. Installed the HP Print and Scan Doctor; ran it and encountered the failed Driver check as above
  4. Installed HP OfficeJet Pro 6830 Basic Device Software (not sure why this didn’t install when I installed the printer using HP Smart?), and reinstalled HP Update and the Help software for this model.

I tried everything again and got all the same errors as before. What would cause printing to work, but not scanning or copying?

Other info: My computer is connected to the printer with a USB cable. I have an Instant Ink subscription, and I am up to date with payments, and I’m connected to the Internet.
