As usual, there is a problem with HP maintaining hardware.  The scanner had to be run in compatibility mode previously & HP finally had to do something to fix the operation.  Having purchased the supposedly best scanner for a high price, it is inconsistent with good faith for HP to discontinue the capability for the item to operate.  I suppose someone with high intelligence on the matter can fix it, which is not me.  Help if you can.

Thank you for sharing your experience — I understand how frustrating this must be, especially after investing in a high-end HP ScanJet 8270 (L1975A).

The HP ScanJet 8270 was released several years ago and is now considered a legacy product. Official driver support ended with Windows 8.1, and newer operating systems (Windows 10 / 11) changed driver frameworks that the original HP scanning software relied on (WIA/TWAIN components). Because of those changes, HP no longer provides updated full-feature drivers for this model on current Windows versions.

However, you can still often restore basic scanning functionality using the following steps:

1. Install the last available HP driver package:

• Go to HP’s support page for the ScanJet 8270:

• Download and install the Windows 8.1 driver package (it’s the most recent version HP published).

• During installation on Windows 10 or 11, right-click the installer → Properties → Compatibility → Run in compatibility mode for Windows 8.

2. Use Microsoft’s built-in scanning utilities:

• Try the Windows Scan app (available from the Microsoft Store) or Windows Fax and Scan.

• These can often detect the ScanJet 8270 automatically if the TWAIN/WIA base driver is installed.

3. Alternative software options:

• Third-party scanning tools such as VueScan (by Hamrick Software) include their own drivers for the HP ScanJet 8270 and can enable full-function scanning on Windows 10 / 11 / macOS.

• While this is not HP software, many users have reported reliable results.

4. Keep the connection stable:

• Ensure the scanner is connected directly to a USB 2.0 port (avoid USB hubs or 3.0 extenders).

• Reboot the PC after each driver installation to finalize recognition.

HP aims to maintain compatibility as long as possible, but when operating-system vendors retire older driver architectures, some legacy peripherals may lose full support. Using the above methods should restore at least basic scan capability for your device.
