Can I change the default scan area to A4? It always goes back to the smaller Letter area as on the screenshot below. Thanks.

If you have not done so,

Check / Adjust the Country / Region - Language settings in HP Smart Settings

 

Example - HP Smart - Windows > Printer Settings > Printer Information

Thank you for your reply.

I played with those country and language settings without result.

The printer shows the desired paper-size (A4) but the problem remains for the scanner.

The issue remains after the restart.

It wasn't like that I few months ago, I have the impression it kept the last used settings back then, but not anymore.
