When attempting to scan a document, I get a message saying that Scanning is not available at this time.  I have scanned documents before and now it's not working.  Recently changed drivers from one that said SCAN ONLY-do not delete, to the regular HP Smart Tank 7301 driver.  I think that might be the problem.  However, when the printer was running on the SCAN ONLY driver, there were other printing problems that kept popping up.  I'm reaching my frustration limit with this printer (which is still under warranty) and am almost ready to just get rid of it.  PLEASE HELP!  Thank you.

Step-by-Step Fix:

1. Use the HP app Diagnose & Fix Tool

This built-in tool can automatically detect and fix scanning issues.

  • Open the HP app.
  • Click the Wrench icon (bottom left corner).
  • Select Diagnose & Fix.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Reinstall the Full HP Driver

Since you switched from the “Scan Only” driver, reinstalling the full driver package ensures all features work properly.


3. Check Windows Services

Sometimes the Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service stops working.

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.
  • Scroll to Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
  • Right-click > Start (or Restart if already running).
  • Set Startup Type to Automatic.


4. Try Scanning via HP Scan or Windows Fax & Scan

If HP Smart fails, try these alternatives:

  • HP Scan (installed with full driver).
  • Windows Fax and Scan (search in Start menu).
