HP smart wont scan as says photo tray out of paper - I'm not trying to use the photo tray!

I am trying to scan a document using HP Smart on my laptop to a HP Envy Photo 6234, but it wont do anything as it says my printer is out of paper in the photo tray.  I dont want to print a photo and have not paper for that tray, but it shoudnt stop me scanning something anyway.  Can anyone help me get round this

There are several places where this can be happening.

A more common issue is the results having changed the paper - or even opened the paper drawer - and not having checked / modified / "accepted" the paper settings on the printer display panel / EWS.

HP Smart settings might benefit from a "recheck".

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

Look for a message on the Printer Control / Display Panel,

Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down menu, Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)

HP Smart / Embedded Web Server (EWS) might need (benefit) from having the printer tray / paper settings checked.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

NOTE:

To open EWS from within HP Smart

Open HP Smart main menu > Settings > Advanced Settings

If you have the Full Feature Software installed,

If you have used HP Scan prior to having used HP Smart, 

It is unlikely that the settings from HP Scan are influencing HP Smart.

Nonetheless,

If you wish to do so,

Check HP Scan and make sure you have not left a Scan shortcut selected that is contrary to what you are trying to do this time with HP Smart.
