Hi @ayiab,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it is to get the 0x80004005 error when you're just trying to scan; that cryptic message keeps you from getting the job done. Let’s solve this together with clear, effective steps tailored to your HP printer:

1. Power-Cycle Your Printer & PC

  1. Turn off your printer, unplug it from power, and turn off your PC.
  2. Wait 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on, then start your PC again.
This simple refresh often clears lingering memory or communication issues, exactly what often triggers that 0x80004005 code.

2. Reinstall the Scanner Device

  1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  2. Select your scanner/printer → click Remove device.
  3. Restart your PC.
  4. Add the device again using HP Smart or the HP Universal Print & Scan Driver
    • Alternatively, use Add a printer or scanner and let Windows auto-install.
  5. Test scanning this removes any old settings causing the error.

3. Clear the Print Spooler & Configuration Cache

Even for scanning, stale print data can sometimes interfere:

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, then click OK.
  2. Find Print Spooler, right-click → Stop.
  3. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files inside.
  4. Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler → Start.
  5. Try to scan again to see if the error is gone.

4. Run the Windows Printer/Scanner Troubleshooter

  1. Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
  2. Run the Printer troubleshooter (works for scanners too).
  3. Follow the recommended fixes offered.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
